My Son was the religious centre of the Champa kingdom, and its brick tower-temples were built and rebuilt between roughly the 4th and 13th centuries. The site lies in a green valley surrounded by mountains in Duy Xuyen district, Quang Nam. Many temples were damaged during the war, but the surviving groups still show remarkable carved brick and sandstone, and the site was listed by UNESCO in 1999.
Public transport to My Son is limited, so most visitors come on a group tour or by private car. A private car is the better choice if you want to arrive at opening time, when the light is soft and the air is cool, and leave when you are ready. From the ticket office, an electric shuttle takes visitors to the start of the temple area, followed by a walk between the temple groups.
What to see at My Son and along the way
- 1
Temple groups B, C and D
The best-preserved part of the site and the core of most visits, with carved towers, altars and small exhibitions of sculpture.
- 2
Group A and the war damage
Group A once held the tallest tower at My Son. Its ruins and nearby bomb craters are a sobering reminder of the site's recent history.
- 3
Cham cultural performance
Traditional Cham dance and music are performed at the site several times a day; check the schedule at the ticket office when you arrive.
- 4
Countryside of Duy Xuyen
The last part of the drive passes rice fields and villages. If you are coming from Hoi An, ask the driver about stopping at the Thu Bon river on the way back.
Which vehicle fits your group
Most My Son trips are half-day return trips without luggage, so the 4-seat sedan is enough for one to three people. Families of four to six will be more comfortable in the 7-seat MPV, which also has space for bags if you combine My Son with a hotel transfer.
Groups of seven or more — study groups and photography groups are common here — can travel in the 16-seat Ford Transit or DCAR limousine.

Tips for visiting My Son
- Leave early. The valley gets hot by late morning, especially from May to August.
- Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and insect repellent; there is little shade between some temple groups.
- Wear shoes you can walk in — the paths are partly unpaved and can be muddy after rain.
- Check current ticket prices and opening hours on the official site or at the ticket office, as they can change.
