Hoi An to Hue by Private Car

Travelling from Hoi An to Hue is the classic way to move between Central Vietnam's two heritage towns. A private car turns the 130 km drive into a sightseeing day, with stops at the Marble Mountains, the Hai Van Pass and Lang Co.

There is no direct train from Hoi An, so the alternatives to a private car are a bus or a taxi to Da Nang station followed by the train to Hue. With luggage, a private car is usually simpler: the driver collects you at your Hoi An hotel and drops you at your hotel in Hue, and you choose which sights to stop at along the way.

The route runs north to Da Nang along the coast, passes the city and then climbs over the Hai Van Pass before descending to Lang Co and the Lap An lagoon. After that, National Road 1 continues through the countryside to Hue. Without stops the drive takes around three hours over the pass; with a visit to the Marble Mountains, photos at the summit and lunch at Lang Co, most guests arrive in Hue in the mid-afternoon.

Stops worth making from Hoi An to Hue

  1. 1

    Marble Mountains

Caves, pagodas and viewpoints on five limestone hills, about 20 minutes from Hoi An. Plan around an hour.

  2. 2

Da Nang beachfront and Dragon Bridge

The road passes My Khe beach and crosses the Han River near the Dragon Bridge — a quick photo stop if you have not spent time in Da Nang.

  3. 3

Hai Van Pass and Hai Van Gate

The highlight of the trip: a winding road to a fortified gate at about 500 m, with views over Da Nang bay and Lang Co.

  4. 4

Lang Co and Lap An lagoon

A quiet beach town and a mirror-calm lagoon with oyster farms, right on the road north of the pass. A popular lunch stop.

  5. 5

    Thanh Toan tile-roofed bridge

An old covered bridge in the rice fields east of Hue, a peaceful last stop before you check in.

Which vehicle fits your group

Because this is a hotel-to-hotel transfer, think about luggage first. The 4-seat sedan suits one to three people with up to two large suitcases. Families of four to six, or smaller groups with a lot of luggage, should choose the 7-seat MPV.

Groups of seven to sixteen can book the 16-seat Ford Transit or DCAR limousine, which has room for the whole group's bags and keeps everyone together at the stops.

Good to know

  • Tell us which stops you want when you book so the driver can plan the timing, and say clearly if you want the Hai Van Pass rather than the tunnel.
  • Leave Hoi An by about 8–9 am if you want to stop at several places and still arrive in Hue in daylight.
  • During the rainy season (roughly September to December) the pass can be in cloud; the tunnel is a good alternative on those days.
  • The same route works in reverse, from Hue to Hoi An, at the same price.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Hoi An to Hue?

About 3–3.5 hours over the Hai Van Pass without stops, or 2.5–3 hours through the tunnel. With sightseeing stops, plan for five to six hours.

Is a private car better than the train from Hoi An to Hue?

Hoi An has no train station, so the train means first getting to Da Nang. A private car goes hotel to hotel and lets you stop at the Hai Van Pass, which the train cannot.

Can we stop at the Marble Mountains and the Hai Van Pass?

Yes, both are on the way. Mention the stops in the booking form so we can confirm the plan and total with you.

Do you drive from Hue to Hoi An as well?

Yes, the route and price are the same in both directions.

Which vehicle should we book for three people with big suitcases?

The 7-seat MPV. The 4-seat sedan takes about two large suitcases, so three people with large bags travel more comfortably in the bigger car.
